Mårbu is ideally located at the north end of Mårvann lake, just at the border of the Hardangervidda National Park. The terrain around the lodge is rolling, and nearby there are high peaks and narrow valleys that cut the landscape. In summer you can take a scheduled passenger launch across the lake directly to the lodge.
Mårbu is a natural stopover for a cabin-to-cabin tour on the Hardanger Plateau, but the area also has fine day hikes and therefore is well suited to families with children who prefer extended stays of several days. Moreover, the fishing is good in waters near the lodge.
The lodge is staffed at Easter and in the summer season. It has 46 bunks in two-bunk and four-bunk rooms, a washroom, showers and a drying room. Out of season it is a self-service emergency shelter (20 bunks), accessible using the DNT cabin key.
Mårbu lies at Skartåkervollen on the shore of Søre Nordmannsslepa. In olden days, Skartåkervollen was a dancing place.
Access: In summer, take Nor-Way bus 185 from Oslo via Drammen and Kongsberg, or Nor-Way bus 186 from Skien via Notodden to Rjukan. From there, take a bus to Kalhovd-Stegaros. By car, drive on National Road 37 toward Rjukan. At Mæl, turn onto National Road 364 toward Austbygdi. At Atrå, turn onto the toll road to Kalhovd (33 km) and Synken. From there, take the passenger launch to Mårbu Turisthytte (first stop). In winter, you can take a bus to Uvdal and a taxi onward to Solheimstulen. Staked route (18 km) to Mårbu Turisthytte. Snowmobile transport is also available.
Access
Summer: Buss fra Oslo via Drammen og Kongsberg, eller fra Skien via Notodden til Rjukan. Derfra buss til Kalhovd eller Synken (båt derfra til hytta). Med bil rv37 mot Rjukan. Ved Mæl ta av til rv364 mot Austbygdi. Ved Atrå ta av til Kalhovd, 33 km (bomvei) og videre til Kalhovd/Synken. Herfra båt til Mårbu turisthytte (første stoppested). Man kan også gå inn til hytta fra bommen vest for Sønstevatn innenfor Imingen. Med sykkel videre til der stien tar av fra veien øst for Gvonneviertjønne, er det knapt 5 timers gangtid inn til hytta. 5 timer å gå er det også fra Solheimstulen helt øverst i Uvdal, mens gangtida er er 6 timer fra Kalhovd.
Winter: Buss til Uvdal og bil videre til Solheimstulen. Herfra er det kvistet rute (18 km) til Mårbu. Når hytta er betjent, er det også mulighet for skutertransport. Det er også kvistet fra Imingfjell Turistheim (26 km). Rutene er vanligvis kvistet i forbindelse med påsken.
