Sandhaug is the lodge closest to the geographic centre of the Hardanger Plateau. The lodge is a good stopping place for hikers and skiers traversing the Plateau as well as for those who wish to stay a few days and perhaps try the fishing.
Hike choices: Here at the middle of the Hardanger Plateau, Hårteigen is the signpost to the west, Gaustadtoppen to the southeast and Hardangerjøkulen to the north.
If you seek fine hiking or skiing and prefer not to go from cabin to cabin, Sandhaug is the place for you. It's a node in the summer hiking and winter skiing networks. The terrain offers easy hiking suitable for hikers of all ages. If you enjoy angling, you can try your luck at fishing in summer or ice fishing in winter.
Facilities: The lodge has 80 bunks in two-bunk, three-bunk and four.-bunk rooms, a larger room and a dormitory. The lodge has a diesel generator (230 VAC).
Seasons: Sandhaug is staffed at Easter and in summer. In the off season during the rest of the year, it offers self-service lodging, available by using the DNT cabin key.
Summer access: By car, on National Road 7 up the Hallingdal valley, past Geilo to Dyranut, and from there 10 km to a carpark at Tinnhølen. The hike in to Sandhaug takes about three hours. On Saturdays in the summer season, there's a DNT charter bus from Oslo to Dyranut. Alternatively, you can take a train on the Bergen Line to Geilo and a bus onward to Dyranut. From the west, take a bus from Kinsarvik to Dyranut. From Dyranut, it's an hour's hike to Bjoreidalshytta, and from there a five hour hike to Sandhaug.
Winter access: There's bus service from Voss via Brimnes to Maurset. There's also a Nor-Way bus express from Oslo to Bergen via Brimnes. From Dyranut, there's a 24 km staked route to Sandhaug. East of Maurset, there's a 30 km staked route to Sandhaug.
Access
Summer:
Bil opp Hallingdal, forbi Geilo og langs Rv 7 til Dyranut og derfra ca 10 km til parkering ved Tinnhølen. Fottur inn til Sandhaug tar ca 3 timer. Alternativt kan du ta tog til Geilo og buss videre til Dyranut. Kommer du vestfra, kan du ta buss fra Kinsarvik til Dyranut. Herfra er det 1 times tur inn til Bjoreidalshytta - og herfra til Sandhaug ytterligere 5 timer.
Winter: Det går buss fra Voss via Brimnes til Maurset. Du kan også benytt eskpressbuss Oslo - Bergen via Brimnes. Fra Dyranut er det kvistet rute 24 km til Sandhaug. Øst for Maurset er det kvistet rute til Sandhaug, ca 30 km.
